5/20 The noted science author died at his home this afternoon at
the end of a long struggle with cancer. His writings delivered
complex natural history topics to the understanding of the general
public. He was a longtime professor at Harvard university and one of
the paleontologists who introduced the theory of punctuated equilibrium,
the concept that evolution works in brief speciation events, spaced
by long periods of stasis.
Gould also battled creationist efforts to
inject pseudoscience into public schools. He will likely be
best remembered for his popular science books and other writings
including his two- decade commitment to a monthly column in Natural
History magazine.
