A newly discovered fossil confirms human ancestors lived in Europe one million years ago. The fossil jaw bone fragment and a few teeth were discovered along with stone tools in Atapuerca in northern Spain.

Along with the human bones and tools, researchers also found animal bones with marks on them suggesting the early humans used tools to scrape the bones. The site also shows evidence of flint knapping and hammering.
